Sea Otter Eating Kelp

Sea Otter Eating Kelp

Morro Bay, California

Returning from Southern California along Route 1, I stopped at Morro Bay, one of my favorite photogenic spots along the coast. It was a beautifully sunny and warm January day, and a family of sea otters was sunbathing, napping, and playing a few yards from shore. A number of them had wrapped themselves in kelp apparently to anchor themselves as they napped. Occasionally one would wake up and start snacking on their blanket. I had not seen this behavior before.
