Disgruntled Juvenile Eagle
Chilkat Eagle Preserve, Haines, Alaska
This poor youngster had just lost a squabble with an adult eagle over a fish carcass. He retreated a safe distance from the fray to lick his wounded ego, landing on a branch just a few feet from where I was photographing, and proceeded to glare unhappily at everything and everyone in the vicinity. Eventually he recovered and returned to the general free for all for food. The overcast conditions provided good lighting, emphasizing the protective coloration which juveniles gradually lose as they reach adulthood.
