Zen Rocks

Acadia National Park, Maine

When I explored the shoreline of Acadia National Park on a summer afternoon, haze in the air discouraged broad landscapes, so I focused on nearscapes instead. The shoreline abounds in rocks ground down by millennia of glacier and wave action. The rocks that remain are composed of very hard stone, resisting breakdown and wearing very smoothly, producing gently rounded shapes such as these. The abstract assembly of shapes, textures, and tones lend themselves to a black and white image, but the nearly transparent layer of water is what I find most interesting in this image.
