Mount San Jacinto, Palm Springs, California

Mount San Jacinto rises 10,000 feet above the arid desert floor a mere 5 miles west of Palm Springs. In winter, the mountain top is typically covered in snow while the valley bakes under the bright sun. Giant Jeffrey Pines grow in profusion on the peak, while cacti populate the lower elevations.
